Science Week

Science week in Scoil Bhride ran from the 22-26 February. We were delighted to welcome teachers and students from St. Mary’s Secondary School and Oaklands Community College to our school. They demonstrated a range of experiments for our pupils and encouraged every class to get involved. We concluded Science week with our own Science Exhibition in the hall. This gave parents an opportunity to witness some of the experiments being carried out in their child’s class on a weekly basis. We wish to thank all the parents who attended the exhibition.

Green-Schools – ‘Low Energy Day’

On Friday 12th of February we held a ‘Low Energy Day’ as part of our Green-School programme. At the start of the day we took an ESB meter reading and did the same at the end of the day. During the day we did not use any equipment that uses electricity such as interactive whiteboards and computers. We also tried not to turn on any lights and kept the heat in the classrooms to a minimum. We found that we significantly reduced the amount of energy we used on a normal school day – only 1.8 Kwh! The Green Committee helped organise an active day including feeding birds, visiting classrooms, making wind turbines and energy quizzes. Second classes displayed energy projects in the hall for parents in the evening time.

Irish Girl Guides

Irish Girl Guides

Every year on the 22nd February, the joint birthday of founder Lord Baden Powell and his wife Olave Baden Powell, World Chief Guide, Girl Guides in 146 countries celebrate World Thinking Day. On this day we think of other Guides around the world with whom we are united through a similar ethos and educational programme.

We are asking all our members to wear all or part of their uniform to school or work on Monday the 22nd February to raise awareness of this campaign.

Our school choir performed at the Peace Proms concert in the RDS on Sunday 7th Feb at 2pm. We were accompanied by the Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland. A great day was had by all. We are looking forward to next year’s concert already!

Sugar In Our Diets

On Thursday 28th January, Adrian Brereton, a former participant on Operation Transformation, spoke to all the children in Scoil Bhríde Primary School. Adrian demonstrated how much sugar can be found in everyday food items. We would like to thank Adrian for taking the time to demonstrate this important healthy eating lesson to all the children. The children loved estimating and measuring the sugar!

Energy Workshop

Nuala Madigan from the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland visited the school with her friend ‘Guzzler’ on Friday the 15th of January for an Energy Workshop. They were very impressed with the children’s participation and commitment to saving energy. The children are now another step further in achieving the Green-School Energy Flag.
